File indexing is a technique used by Microsoft Windows to keep a track of where various files are stored on the hard drive. This helps speed up file searches on your system, but unless you use the in built search option quite a lot, we would recommend turning it off

Top Tips

Turning off file indexing is only one technique that can be used to improve drive performance, we would also recommend regular cleaning out of old files, browser cache, and re-cycle bin, as well as regular de-fragmenting of the drive. Adding system RAM will also help to reduce disk access

Increase system performance by disabling file indexing.

File indexing may be useful for those people who love to scatter files all over their hard drives and can never find them, however such convenience comes at a price, and using file indexing can have a noticeable impact on system performance.

Turning off the indexing service is one way to help to squeeze every last bit of processor power out of your P.C.

  • Open up 'My Computer'
  • Right click on the icon for your hard drive and select Properties.
  • Un-tick the box marked 'Allow Indexing Service....' that can be found under the General Tab.

Disable File Indexing

You should now see a marked increase in hard drive performance
